INFIGHTING ADMIRALS

The development of the Royal Navy during the latter 19th century was complicated by the rivalry between two admirals, Lord Beresford and Lord Fisher. Although their careers paralleled each other, the two men were different in virtually every way. Beresford came from a noble family, while Fisher earned his title after years of service. Fisher was involved in all the Royal Naval innovations of the pre-World War I period, while Beresford was a strong advocate of the more traditional approach.
